Wombles vinyl albums

The Wombles released four original albums from 1973 to 1975, followed by a number of greatest hits compilations.

Though the songs were initially intended for children, as a spin-off from the TV series, they cover a surprising range of musical styles and subject matter. The first album introduces many of the characters, while later songs delve into fantasy and explore the world, in keeping with the semi-educational activities in the Wombles annuals.

Taking in everything from pure pop to country and orchestral music, the songs are tinged with subtle humour and cultural references. The Wombles even had their own glam rock hits with Remember You’re A Womble and Wombling Merry Christmas, still fondly remembered by children of the Seventies.

The band was the brainchild of songwriter/composer Mike Batt, aided by a group of musicians including guitarist Chris Spedding (who went on to work with the Sex Pistols) and drummer Clem Cattini. Mike Batt has since had a very successful career, both as the writer/producer of many hits including Bright Eyes (Art Garfunkel) and A Winter’s Tale (David Essex), and as the composer of symphonic work including many film and TV scores.
