Orinoco launches the Great British Spring Clean
The Wombles have joined forces with Keep Britain Tidy for this year’s Great British Spring Clean.
Orinoco was invited to the launch event at the House of Commons on 22 January, where Members of Parliament and other guests enjoyed having their photo taken with him (see their tweets below).
The public launch of the campaign was on Saturday, 25 January, with the front page of the Daily Mail featuring a photo of Orinoco with the prime minister, Boris Johnson.
A video clip on social media showed Boris Johnson reciting the lyrics of The Wombling Song.
The Wombles have had a longstanding connection with Keep Britain Tidy, helping to spread their message of ‘take your litter home’, or indeed “womble up the rubbish and put it in the bin”. In 2014, they joined their local Big Tidy Up on Wimbledon Common.
The Great British Spring Clean is about demonstrating that you love where you live – whether that’s by ‘pledging to pick’ while you’re walking the dog or taking the kids to school, hosting a clean-up or joining someone else’s event. Last year, more than 560,000 people took part and this year Keep Britain Tidy is aiming to get 600,000 ‘litter heroes’ out there.
This year’s campaign runs from 20 March to 13 April 2020. Find out how to take part on the Keep Britain Tidy website.

Not only does litter spoil the natural beauty of our environment, it also poses a threat to wildlife. That’s why I am using my @keepbritaintidy litter picker to take part in the #GBSpringClean https://t.co/Ne82ueM4n1

.@KeepBritainTidy's research shows that people are more likely to litter where litter is present. Small actions can make a big difference. Take part in this years #GBSpringClean and help clean our streets, parks and beaches in North Somerset https://t.co/Xf2isd7dmw #LitterHeroes pic.twitter.com/hpQP2SLgWs

I support @KeepBritainTidy 's #GBSpringClean (20 March-13 April 2020) and declare that litter which degrades the beauty of our environment and therefore threatens to harm wildlife is not acceptable. More details - https://t.co/auSdxhfKas pic.twitter.com/al31rmeGLR

Your own litter-picker and the chance to meet a womble = an offer you can’t refuse - but the important bit is supporting @KeepBritainTidy’s #GBSpringClean 20 March - 13 April. Litter is unsightly and a threat to wildlife - will you join Nottingham’s #LitterHeroes? pic.twitter.com/J62Ndva9lI
