Wombles theme park announced in April Fools joke
“Shock plans unveiled to build Wombles theme park in Plough Lane,” revealed the Wimbledon Guardian at 6am on 1 April.
“The future of Wimbledon greyhound track has been thrown into doubt after shock plans emerged to create Wombledonia - a Wombles-based theme park - on the site.”
An ‘artist’s impression’ of the proposed theme park shows a giant Orinoco figure in front of Wimbledon Stadium, with a rollercoaster and a helter skelter visible behind a huge ‘Wombledonia’ sign. Haydon the Womble is walking along with a balloon, and there’s a ‘No Littering’ sign nearby. A new hotel overlooks the stadium.
The article went on to say that Wombledonia would feature rides such as Uncle Bulgaria Land, the Orinocoaster and Wild Water Wombles.
The spokesman for the company planning the theme park was ‘Apdilli Fay Soor’, almost an anagram of April Fool’s Day. The chairman of Garratt Park Protectors Trust, named as ‘Wyn Dup-Merchant’, said: “Merton Council cannot allow Wombledonia to become reality.”
